Executive summary:

In accordance with EU A4 Regulation (EC) No 440/2008, Annex, Official Journal of the European Union L142/1, density was measured using the hydrostatic balance method for liquids (OECD Guidelines for The Testing of Chemicals, 109, July 7 1995).

Density of the liquid sample was measured by a hydrostatic balance method on the KRÜSS K11 tensiometer. The measuring probe of known density includes a cylindrical rod suspended on a wire hook which is immersed into the sample liquid during analysis.

As a result of the buoyancy of a solid in a liquid, the measured weight in a liquid is less than that measured in air. The mass of the volume of liquid displaced by the measuring probe corresponds to the difference in weight by Archimedes’ principle. If the density of the measuring probe is known then the

density of the liquid can be obtained by differential weighing.

Using a measuring probe with a density of 2.330 g/mL, two density measurements were performed on the sample without replacing the liquid in the sample cup. The temperature of the sample was maintained through the use of a circulating water bath to the temperature jacket sample holder accessory, in order to achieve a sample temperature of 20°C ± 1°C. The sample temperature was recorded immediately after each measurement using a long stem thermometer (Fisher FB61328, 255LN) that has an accuracy of ± 0.2°C. Based on historical data from the theoretical values of water, the density results are estimated to be ± 0.5%.

Density of hydroxypropyl, 2-, trimethylammonium formate was determined to be 1.079 g/cm³ at 20.6 °C using pycnometer method.
