Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to algae: 72 hour ErC50 931 mg/l (nominal) (exceeds highest concentration tested) (EU method C.3), read-across from an analogous substance, 3-trimethoxysilylpropane-1-thiol (CAS 4420-74-0). The ErC50 is equivalent to 731 mg/l, ErC10 is equivalent to 72 mg/l and NOErC equivalent to 31 mg/l when expressed in terms of 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propanethiol.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
731 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
72 mg/L

Additional information

There are no reliable algal inhibition data available for 3-[dimethoxy(methyl)silyl]propanethiol (CAS 31001-77-1), therefore good quality data for an appropriate structural analogue, 3-trimethoxysilylpropane-1-thiol (CAS 4420-74-0), have been read across. Both substances have structurally similar silanol hydrolysis products, 3-(dihydroxymethylsilyl)propanethiol and 3- (trihydroxysilyl)propanethiol respectively. The other hydrolysis product is methanol in both cases.

A 72-h ErC50 value of 931 mg/l, ErC10 of 92 mg/l and a NOErC of 40 mg/l (nominal) have been determined for the effects of 3-trimethoxysilylpropane-1-thiol (CAS 4420-74-0) on growth rate of Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus). In view of the test media preparation method and exposure regime it is likely that the test organisms were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products of the tested substance. The ErC50 is therefore equivalent to 731 mg/l, ErC10 72 mg/l and NOErC 31 mg/l when expressed in terms of 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propanethiol.

Refer to the discussion in the Section 6 endpoint summary or further discussion of the approach to chemical safety assessment for this registration substance, and justification for read-across used.
