Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No inhibition of sludge by beta-alanine is expected, due to the readily biodegradability of the substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

An OECD test on ready biodegradability (301 C) under GLP conditions was consulted to assess the toxicity of beta-alanine towards microorganisms. After 14 days of incubation with 30 mg/L sludge and 100 mg/L test substance a BOD of 83 -92 % could be measured (MITI (Japan), 1993). A NOEC of >= 100 mg/L could be derived from the readily biodegradable test. No toxicity was observed. Hence, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated.
