Description of key information

The determination of the 72h-EC50 and the 72h-EC10 (algae) of (-)-beta-pinene is based on one experimental study and one QSAR.
Measured and estimated data ranging from EC50 0.70 mg/L to 0.826 mg/L.

Delpit, 2014

In a 48-hour acute toxicity study, the cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to (-)-beta-pinene at nominal concentrations of 2.0, 2.5, 3.1, 3.9, 4.8 mg/L under static conditions in accordance with the OECD TG 201. The EC10 and EC50 values based on growth rate were 0.378 and 0.826 mg/L, respectively. The 72h-ErC50 and the 72h-ErC10 obtained in this study can be used as key values for chemical safety assessment.

A QSAR model was used to predict the inhibition of growth to algae of the test item (-)-beta-pinene. This QSAR has been validated to be compliant with the OECD recommendations for QSAR modeling (OECD, 2004) and predicts the endpoint value which would be expected when testing the substance under experimental conditions in a laboratory following Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 201, "Freshwater Alga and Cyanobacteria, Growth Inhibition Test", referenced as Method C.3 of Commission Regulation No. 440/2008. The 72-hour ErC50 is predicted as 0.70 mg/L.
