Description of key information

Endpoint concentration was reported as EC50 >10 mg octylphenol/L for the activated sludge mixture, and EC10 >1,700 mg octylphenol/L for Pseudomonas putida.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
10 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
1 700 mg/L

Additional information

Reliable toxicity data for a study of octylphenol exposure to microorganisms included Hϋls (1991) withPseudomanas putida, and a study by Safepharm (1991) using a mixture of activated sludge microorganisms. Test durations ranged from 3 hr (mixture) to 5 hr (Pseudomonas putida) with endpoints determined by inhibition of respiration rate. Endpoint concentration was reported as EC50 >10 mg octylphenol/L for the activated sludge mixture, and EC10 >1,700 mg octylphenol/L forPseudomonas putida. Both of these studies were selected as key studies.
