Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The bioconcentration factor (BCF) for earthworms is calculated using measured LogKow data as there are no experimental earthworm data available. The measured LogKow is provided in Section 4 as 4.8 (Spilker, 2009). The calculated BCF is 758. This results in a default biomagnification factor (BMF) of 1.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

BCF (terrestrial species):
758 dimensionless

Additional information

Determination of a bioconcentration factor (BCF) follows Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment Chapter R.16: Environmental Exposure Estimation (ECHA 2008) and Chapter R. 7c Endpoint Specific Guidance (ECHA 2008). Chapter R.16.5.3.5 states that there may be bioaccumulation potential if log Kow is >3. The log Kowof octylphenol is provided by Spilker (2009) as 4.8. Therefore, as per REACH Annex IX, bioaccumulation information must be presented for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 t/y or more.

Chapter R.7c states that BCFs can be determined experimentally, by calculation using Kow, or by estimating using BCF models such as QSARs. There is no experimental data available for terrestrial organisms so the BCF is calculated using the Kow. The BCF is calculated using the ECHA Equation R.16-76, which is BCF earthworm = (0.84+0.012Kow)/RHO earthworm. The RHOearthworm by default value of 1 (kg wwt/L) can be assumed.

Calculated BCF

BCF earthworm = (0.84+0.012Kow)/RHO earthworm

BCF calculation using logKow of 4.8 (Kow is 63095.73)

BCF earthworm = 0.84+(0.012*63095.73)/1

BCF earthworm = 757.99

The BCF of 758 for earthworms indicates that octylphenol has a low tendency to accumulate in terrestrial organisms. This value is recommended for octylphenol bioconcentration in this risk assessment and does not meet the B-criterion in the PBT assessment.
