Description of key information

The following information is available for the Sediment toxicity endpoint:
Thomas, S., Krueger, H. O. and Kendall, T. Z. (2003a). Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD): A prolonged sediment toxicity test with Hyalella azteca using spiked sediment with 2% total organic carbon. Report no.: 439A-119B. Report date: 2003-08-19.
Thomas, S., Kruger, H. O. and Kendall, T. Z. (2003b). Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD): A prolonged sediment toxicity test with Hyella azteca using spiked sediment with 5% total organic carbon. Report no.: 439A-120. Report date: 2003-06-17.
Thomas et al ( 2003a and 2003b) were both rated reliability 1 according to the criteria set out by Klimisch et al. (1997). Thomas et al. (2003a) was chosen as the key study as it provided more complete reporting of methods and results.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10, LC10 or NOEC for freshwater sediment:
1 000 mg/kg sediment dw

Additional information

Two chronic studies have been conducted in a sediment dwelling species, H. azeteca. One study used sediment of 5% TOC content, the other contained 2% TOC content. The NOEC in both studies was 1000 mg/kg dry sediment, the highest dose tested. Thus, organic carbon content of the sediment did not affect HBCD's toxicity and HBCD was not chronically toxic to the sediment dwelling organism, H. azeteca.
