Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The melting point was determined in study to characterize hydrocortisone with respect to the existence of different solid state forms.
General Physical Chemistry, Schering AG Berlin. Study report No. KS29 (APC 18/94), author M. Bock, dated 1994-03-21.
Result: 213°C to 221°C (polymorph A, with beginning decomposition)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Five polymorphs of hydrocortisone could be discriminated by IR spectrometry, arbitrarily called A, B, C, D, E. The most common solid state form is polymorph A. Different production batches were assigned to this solid state form (study report A05285 (ADP 2001_152), author G. Winter, dated 2001 -08 -17). It melts between 213°C and 221°C (DTA onset). This wide range is assumed to be due to beginning decomposition at the melting point. Polymorph B melts at 188.9°C (DTA onset) with simultaneous recrystallization to one of the higher melting polymorphs.

Polymorph C was not available.

Polymorphs D, E and A could not be distinguished by thermoanalytic methods (DTA)
