Additional information

skin irritation

The skin irritating potential of the test substance was examined in an in vivo study with 3 rabbits. The single application of the substance to the skin of the animals caused slight up to well-defined redness and very slight edema within 72 hrs after application. In accordance with 67/548/EEC, the test item needs to be classified as skin irritating, but according to the GHS classification the test item has not to be classified. [BASF, 1984]

eye irritation

The eye irritating potential of the test substance was examined in an in vivo study with 3 rabbits. The single application of the substance to the conjunctival sac of the right eyelid of the animals caused well-defined redness and slight up to well-defined chemosis of the conjunctiva

within 72 hrs after application. Furthermore, the substance caused a cornea opacity which was not reversible within 8 days and showed no effects on the iris. [BASF, 1984]

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: slightly irritating

Effects on eye irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Classification for skin irritation is not warranted according to the criteria of EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, but according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC 1,1-dimethoxytrimethylamine needs to be classified as skin irritating (R38).

1,1-Dimethoxytrimethylamine is considered to be eye irritating (EU: R41; GHS: cat.1 H318) according to the criteria of EU Directive 67/548/EEC and EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
