A simplified water solubility test was followed. A known quantity of the test item was weighed into a conical flask and 20 mL of water was added, the flasks were stoppered and agitated in an orbital shaker water bath. After 24 hours, flasks are removed and allowed to equilibrate for 24 hours prior to filtering with a 0.1 μm cellulose nitrate membrane filter. ICP-OES was used to determine the concentration of the PGM in the resulting solution.

The amount of test material used was sufficient to produce a saturated solution for substances with water solubility below 10 g/L. For substance that were soluble at this level, < 10 g/L was reported as the limit of solubility.

This key result is taken from a published article in peer-reviewed literature. The quick shake-flask method was followed and the method is well described (Gregory 2014). Concentrations of platinum in solution were analysed using ICP-OES. The study is considered to be suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. The water solubility of platinum 1,3-diethenyl-1,1,3,3 -tetramethyldisiloxane has been determined to be 0.0349 g/L using a simplified water solubility test.

 

In addition, supporting data are available from solubility trials conducted in test media representative of that used in ecotoxicity studies. Although the study was not conducted according to guideline, it is considered to be useful supporting data as both the organic ligand and platinum were analysed in the test solutions.

 

96-hour solubility trials were conducted using test media representative of that used in ecotoxicity studies (Cu-free water with adjusted pH 6, as this reflects the lowest pH acceptable for an algae test with the highest expected solubility), and three methods of separation (filtration, centrifugation and settling by gravity) (Kotthoff 2016). Samples were taken at 24 hour intervals; platinum was analysed by ICP-MS and the organic ligand by GC-MS. The study does not follow a standard test guideline and is not GLP-compliant, but is used as supporting information to assess the solubility of this substance.

 

The organic ligand was only detected at levels >LOQ in one of the centrifuged samples at the start of the test, and was not detected in any of the filtered samples. Platinum was detected at low levels (3.901 - 9.43 µg/L for filtered and centrifuged samples). Concentrations were higher for the decanted samples, but this is believed to be due to the presence of undissolved test item.
