Description of key information
Under the conditions of this study, the density of the test material was determined to be 990 kg/m³ at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C. The relative density was determined to be 0.990.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Relative density at 20C:
- 0.99
Additional information
The key study was conducted in line with GLP and the standardised guidelines OECD 109 and EU Method A.3. It was assigned a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the criteria detailed by Klimisch (1997).
The density of the test material was investigated using a gas comparison pycnometer
Due to the test material’s viscous and paste-like nature, it was considered that the usual pycnometer method for liquids would be very difficult. Therefore, it was decided to transfer the test item to a glass vessel at ambient temperature and which could fit inside the sample cell of a gas comparison pycnometer.
The pre-weighed glass vessel was placed in the sample cell of the pycnometer and the pressure readings taken after pressurising the reference cell of known volume and then after switching to the sample cell of known volume, calculating the volume of the vessel.
The test material was transferred to the glass vessel until approximately half full; this was cooled to 20 °C prior to being weighed. This was placed in the sample cell and the measurements performed.
Under the conditions of this study, the density of the test material was determined to be 990 kg/m³ at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C. The relative density was determined to be 0.990.
