Description of key information
Hydroxybutyl vinyl ether is not skin irritating according to Directive 67/548/EEC or CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008.
Following CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008, 4 -(vinyloxy)butan-1 -ol is irritating to the eye (cat. 2A).

In a study according to OECD guideline 404 (no GLP) a patch (2.5 x 2.5 cm) soaked with 0.5 mL of unchanged test substance was applied on the clipped skin of three rabbits under semiocclusive conditions for 4 h (washing); 24 h after application of the test substance only erythema score 1 was observed in 2 rabbits (no effects in the 3rd animal), which was fully reversible 48 h after application. No edema was observed (BASF 1984).
Eye irritation
In a study according to OECD Guideline 405 (BASF 1984; no GLP) each of three Vienna White rabbits received instillations of 0.1 mL of the unchanged test substance to the eye and left unwashed. Scoring was performed 1, 24, 48, 72h and 8 and 14 days after instillation. The scores for cornea, iris, conjunctivae and chemosis were 1.0, 0.3, 2.0 and 1.1, respectively (mean of the 24, 48 and 72 h readings). In detail, cornea opacity reached score 1 in all 3 rabbits 24, 48, and 72 h after application as well as conjunctival redness score 2. The redness of conjunctivae was not completely reversible at day 14 (no later readings). With respect to cornea apacity and conjunctival redness the test substance is irritant to the eye following CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008.
Justification for classification or non-classification
According to EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, the substance is classified as irritant to the eye (Cat. 2A; H319).
