Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusion on classification
Environmental classification for the poorly water soluble substances under consideration is based on the lowest acute and chronic threshold values from the Rh ecotoxicity test data combined with TDp test data generated as outlined in OECD Guidance Document on Transformation/Dissolution of Metals and Metal Compounds in Aqueous Media (OECD, 2001).
Dirhodium trioxide has been tested in a full TDp assay according to OECD TG29 (cfr. details in IUCLID section 4 'Water solubility'). Dirhodium trioxide dissolution [in µg/L]
in this assay is summarised as:
24h Screening* | 7d TDp | 28d TDp
MWt | Rh Wt% | 100 mg/L@pH6 | 100 mg/L@pH8.5 | 1 mg/L | 10 mg/L | 100 mg/L | 1 mg/L
dirhodium trioxide | Rh2O3 | 253.81 | 81.1 | 3 | 2 | 0.01 | 0.04 | 0.52 | <0.01 |
*values in bold give the highest metal release. The consequent 7 and 28 day tests are performed at this pH value.
The acute and chronic ERV values, for other water soluble rhodium(III) subtances, are 290 (48h EC50 value for D. magna with rhodium trichloride (Okamoto, 2014)) and 46 µg Rh/L (72h EC10 for P. subcapitate with diammonium sodium hexakis(nitrito-N)rhodate (Wenzel, 2015)) corresponding to 358 and 57 µg Rh2O3/L (conversion based on molecular weight conversion from soluble ion to the substance considered)
Comparing the acute and chronic ERV values with the TDp test results (cfr table below) as outlined in ECHA Guidance on the application of the CLP criteria (version 5.0; ECHA, 2017), it is concluded that the metal release at all doses and duration relevant for classificiation are well below the ERV values, and that no classification for environmental hazard is required:
Acute ERV (µg TI/L) |
Chronic ERV (µg TI/L) |
24h Screening | 7d TDp | 28d TDp | Acute aquatic hazard | Long-term aquatic hazard
MWt | Rh Wt% | 100 mg/L@pH6 | 100 mg/L@pH8.5 | 1 mg/L | 10 mg/L | 100 mg/L | 1 mg/L
dirhodium trioxide | Rh2O3 | 253.81 | 81.1 | 357.63 | 56.73 | 3 | 2 | 0.01 | 0.04 | 0.52 | <0.01 | not classified | not classified |
*values in bold give the highest metal release. The consequent 7 and 28 day tests are performed at this pH value.
