Data are available for short-term toxicity of the registered substance to fish. A 96 hours LC50 value of 251 mg/l has been determined for effects on mortality of Danio rerio (tested as Brachydanio rerio). The studies with invertebrates and algae with the registered substance have been disregarded since low pH is thought to have negatively affected the outcome of the studies.
Short-term toxicity to invertebrates and algae data are available with the structurally analogous substance trimethoxy(vinyl)silane. The studies have reported a 48-h EC50 value of 169 mg/L with Daphnia magna and a 7-d EC50 value of 210 mg/L with algae Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata.
Justification for read-across between triacetoxyethylsilane (CAS 17689-77-9) and trimethoxy(vinyl)silane (CAS 2768-02-7):
Reliable data are available for a structurally analougous substance, trimethoxy(vinyl)silane (CAS 2768-02-7). Trimethoxy(vinyl)silane is a close structural analogue of triacetoxyethylsilane, and the hydrolysis half-lives of trimethoxy(vinyl)silane and triacetoxyethylsilane
indicate that, under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment, both will hydrolyse to similar hydrolysis products vinylsilanetriol and ethylsilanetriol respectively over the course of the test. The other hydrolysis products are methanol and acetic acid, respectively; the properties of these substances are well characterised. Methanol is non-hazardous to the environment and it is considered unlikely that its presence significantly affected the results of the test performed with trimethoxy(vinyl)silane. The effects of acetic acid on aquatic organisms are limited to those that result from changes to pH in unbuffered media. No data are available with long-term toxicity to invertebrates and fish. However adata waiver is applicable for long-term toxicity to fish and data are available with a structural analogue of the registered substance for long-term toxicity to invertebrates. A 21-day NOEC value of ≥100 mg/L has been determined for the effects of trichloro(ethyl)silane (CAS 115-21-9) on survival and reproduction of Daphnia magna when expressed in terms of nominal concentrations.
