Additional information

Absorption, tissue distribution and excretion of the close chemical analogue gellan gum has been studied in the rat and tolerance of the same gum has been investigated in human volunteers. The rat data showed near complete faecal plus urinary excretion of radioactivity following a single oral dose of the radiolabelled gum (minimum >91% excretion, 85% or more in the faeces), with <5% being retained in the body. The observed pattern of bioelimination with minimal tissue retention is indicative of limited absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. The absence of physiological response following repeated daily intake in the human volunteer study is compatible with such low absorption. Based on the high degree of chemical similarity between gellan gum and Diutan, it is reasonable to predict that Diutan would show a comparable pattern of low absorption and extensive excretion in the faeces.
