Description of key information

A study was conducted in accordance OECD guideline 201, "Freshwater algae growth inhibition test of N-(2-(dimethylamino)ethoxy)ethyl)-N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine". Observations of both algal growht inhibition and algal growth rate reduction were recorded for Selenastrum capricornutum.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
32 mg/L

Additional information

The algal growth inhibition test was conducted at five analytically-verified nominal concentrations. Selenastrum capricornutumwas evaluated with respect to both the mean cell density (biomass) and growth rate over the course of the 72-hour assay.  From the evaluation of the biomass endpoint, the NOEbC was determined to be 18 mg/L and the EbC50was determined to be 64 mg/L.  From the evaluation of the growth rate endpoint, the NOErC was determined to be 32 mg/L and the ErC50was determined to be > 100 mg/L (i.e., less than 50% growth rate reduction was observed at the highest test concentration of 100 mg/L).  The appropriate endpoint for the determination of the PNECaquaticvalue is the growth rate; therefore, the ErC50> 100 mg/L was one of the values used as the point of departure for the calculation of the PNECaquaticvalue.
