Description of key information

- OECD 202 study, RL1, GLP, Daphnia magna were exposed to nominal concentrations of 0, 6.25, 12.5, 25.0, 50.0, 100% of saturated solution corresponding to geometric mean concentrations of 0.221, 0.322, 0.446, 1.19, 3.60 mg/L under semi-static conditions for 48h. The 48 hours-EC50 for Daphnia magna was 0.415 mg/L (95% confidence limits: 0.388 - 0.436 mg/L), based on measured geometric mean concentrations.

- OECD 201 study, RL1, GLP, freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to nominal concentrations of 100, 50.0, 25.0, 12.5, 6.25 % of a saturated solution corresponding to geometric measured mean concentrations of 1.12, 0.792, 0.553, 0.389, 0.273 mg/L under static conditions for 72h, the EC50-value with 95% confidence intervals after 72 h was 1.09 mg/L (1.04 - 1.11). The EC10-value with 95% confidence intervals after 72 h was 0.722 mg/L (0.663 - 0.764) and the NOEC-value after 72 hours was 0.553 mg/L, based on measured geometric mean concentrations.

Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebtates

The 48-hr-acute toxicity of m-Xylylenebismaleimide to Daphnia magna was studied under semi-static conditions according to OECD Guideline 202 (2004). Daphnids were exposed to control and test chemical at concentrations of 0.221, 0.322, 0.446, 1.19, 3.60 mg test item /L (geom. mean measured concentrations) in dilution water for 48 h.

Mortality/immobilization was observed daily, pH and temperature were recorded at the beginning and at the renewal of the test media. 

The 48-hour EC50 was 0.415 mg/L (95% confidence limits: 0.388 - 0.436 mg/L).

 

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

In a study conducted according to OECD TG 201 freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to m-Xylylenebismaleimide at geometric measured mean concentrations of 0.273, 0.389, 0.553, 0.792, 1.12 mg/L for 72h under static conditions.

m-Xylylenebismaleimide was found to inhibit the growth rate of the freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata after 72 hours. The EC50-value with 95% confidence intervals (ErC50) after 72 h was 1.09 mg/L (1.04 - 1.11). The EC10-value with 95% confidence intervals ErC10 after 72 h was 0.722 mg/L (0.663 - 0.764). The NOEC-value after 72 hours was 0.553 mg/L.

All effect levels are given based on the geometric measured mean test item concentrations of m-Xylylenebismaleimide.

Conclusion

In the course of aquatic toxicity testing the water flea Daphnia magna was most sensitive organism to m-Xylylenebismaleimide. The EC50 value determined during a 48h short-term toxicity study under semi-static conditions was 0.415 mg/L.
