Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2017-05-03 to 2017-07-18
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:

Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Version / remarks:
(2009)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. certificate)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks:
ignition of a cluster with a length of 250 mm and a triangular cross-section of 10 mm height and 20 mm width with the hot flame of a gas burner.
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

When the beige, powdery test item was directly exposed to the hot burner flame, the powder melted forming orange to brown drops which melted away on the tile. After longer exposure to the burner flame the test item expanded to a solid black mass which glowed orange during exposure. The melted, liquid test item and the black, solid product burned for a moment after removing the burner flame (approx. 5 sec.) and a grey to dark grey smoke occurred.

After cooling off, the black, solid residue was hollow inside and a re-solidified, resin-like material remained around the black mass.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
In the present test conducted according to test guideline UN Test N.1. (2009), m-Xylylenebismaleimide was not flammable within 2 minutes by the flame of a gas burner within the ignition zone (the first 50 mm of the formed test item).
Thus, the test item has to be classified as ‘Not readily combustible solid of Division 4.1‘ in the sense of the test guideline UN Test N.1. and is not classified according to GHS/CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1:2.7.

Description of key information

- study conducted according to UNITED NATIONS (2009): Recommendations on the TRANSPORT OF DANGEROUS GOODS, Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th edition, Class 4, Division 4.1, the test item is ‘Not readily combustible solid of Division 4.1‘

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

In the present test conducted according to test guideline UN Test N.1. (2009),  the test item was not flammable within 2 minutes by the flame of a gas burner within the ignition zone (the first 50 mm of the formed test item).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item was not flammable within 2 minutes by the flame of a gas burner within the ignition zone (the first 50 mm of the formed test item), thus according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) and the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) the test item does not need to be classified as flammable.
