Description of key information

2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene is a yellow solid at 20°C and 1013 hPa (visual assessment).

The melting point of 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene was determined according to guideline EU Method A.1 (Melting/freezing temperature) and was measured at 174-176°C.

In a study according to OECD guideline 113 (adopted 12 May, 1981) the substance decomposes at 210 - 310°C and at 470 - 500°C and decomposition was not finished at 500°C; no boiling point could be detected because of decomposition.

There are relevant handbook data about the density of 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene. According to Yaws' Critical Property Data for Chemical Engineers and Chemists, the density is 1.3876 g/cm³ at 25°C.

In the present study, the particle size distribution of 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene was determined using laser diffraction. The powder is brought via a powder dispersing cell into the laser light beam and the diffraction pattern is determined. From the diffraction pattern the particle size distribution was calculated. The test item 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene has a median particle size D50 = 50.1 µm.

The vapour pressure of 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene was estimated to be 3.00E-10 Pa. The estimation was performed with EPISuite v4.11 and the predicted value is in line with the value published on SRC.

Similarily, the partition coefficient was predicted by EPISuite v4.11 (-0.0036) and also published on SRC database (0.00). The partition coefficient is considered to be -0.0036 at 25°C since the EPISuite prediction is more accurate than the one used to predict the published value.

 The water solubility of 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene was determined using the flask method in a study according to EU Method A.6 (Water Solubility). The water solubility was determined to be 60 mg/L at 20°C.

In a study according to OECD guideline 115 (adopted ) a 90 % saturated solution of 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene was prepared and the surface tension was determined with a tensiometer at 20°C to be 59.21 mN/m (standard deviation ± 0.05 mN/m). Considering that distilled water has a surface tension of 72.75 mN/m at 20 °C and the test item showed a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m under the conditions of this referring method, the test item 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene should be regarded as being surface-active material.

 

Because the substance is a solid at 20°C testing of the flash point can be omitted.

Autoflammability of the test item was determined by a test according to VDI recommendation 2263, Part 1. The test substance in addition to a reference substance are placed in a grewer ofen and heated approx. 1°C /min. exceeding the temperature curve of the reference substance means the substance is readily autoflammable. There were no exothermic reactions of the test item, thus, the substance is considered to be not autoflammable. In line with this result a test of flammability according to EU Method A.10 was conducted with 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene and the test substance is considered to be not highly flammable.

In the DSC-measurements the test item 2,4-Bismaleimidotoluene showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range of 160-190°C. An exothermic effect could be observed in the temperature range of 210-310°C with an energy of approximately -180 J/g. A second exothermal effect occurred in the temperature range of 470 > 500°C with a decomposition energy greater -230 J/g.

SADT: Due to the fact that the exothermic effect started above 200°C it can be stated that the SADT > 75°C.

According to the results the test item is classified as follows concerning self-reactive properties:

 

UN Transportation Regulation: The test item does not have to be classified as a self-reactive substance in class 4, division 4.1 since the SADT is > 75°C.

GHS (CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.8): The test item does not have to be classified as a self-reactive substance since the SADT is > 75°C.
