First-aid measures

DESCRIPTION OF FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation -

If inhaled, move to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration and/or oxygen. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Skin contact -

Remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Eye contact -

Rinse eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids.

Continue for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention.

Ingestion -

If swallowed, wash out mouth with water. Get medical attention if you feel unwell.

MOST IMPORTANT SYMPTOMS AND EFFECTS, BOTH ACUTE AND DELAYED

To the best of our knowledge the toxicity of this substance was not fully investigated, thus sympoms and effects are not completely known. Toxic if swallowed, on skin and if inhaled due to potential hepatoxicity (development of methemogglobinemia).

INDICATION OF ANY IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION AND SPECIAL TREATMENT NEEDED

Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Fire-fighting measures

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA

Suitable extinguishing media -

Use water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide as appropriate for surrounding fire and materials.

Unsuitable extinguishing media -

No limitations given for this substance.

SPECIAL HAZARDS ARISING FROM THE SUBSTANCE OR MIXTURE

Combustible, but not flammable. In case of fire toxic fumes of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) may be emitted.

ADVICE FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Prevent fire-extinguishing water from contaminating the watercourses.

Accidental release measures

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS, PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

If the product is released or spilt, take proper precautions to minimize exposure by using appropriate personal protective equipment (see section Exposure controls / Personal protection). The area should be adequately ventilated.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS

Collect spillage and place in containers for waste and sened for destruction. Avoid release to drains.

METHODS AND MATERIAL FOR CONTAINMENT AND CLEANING UP

Moisten the spillage prior to sweeping up. Keep in closed suitable container and hold for waste disposal. Ventilate and wash the spill site with water after material pick up is complete.

Handling and storage

PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING

Avoid dust generation and inhalation of dust. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Ensure good ventilation. Use recommended personal protective equipment. A device for eyewash should be available.

CONDITIONS FOR SAFE STORAGE, INCLUDING ANY INCOMPATIBILITIES

Store at regular indoor conditions, generally 15 to 25C, and keep the container tightly closed.

Exposure controls / personal protection

CONTROL PARAMETERS

To the best of our knowledge, established occupational exposure limit value is not available for Ethyl-N-(4-nitrophenoxy)acetimidate.

Recommended Occupational Exposure Limit Value:

Substance                                                                 Value                                           Control Parameters                              Comments

Ethyl-N-(4-nitrophenoxy)acetimidate                         0.01-0.10 mg/m3                                 LTEL 8h                                      In-house limit

LTEL: Long-term exposure limit (8 hours TWA (time-weighted average))

EXPOSURE CONTROL

Appropriate engineering controls -

Use appropriate cotnrols (e.g. containment, local exhaust ventilation) as specified in a workplace risk assessment. Technical measures and appropriate operations should be given priority over the use of personal protective equipment. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.

Personal protective equipment -

Eye face protection: Wear safety glasses with side shields. An emergency eyewash station should be available.

Skin protection : Handle with impervious gloves. The selected gloves must comply with the specifications in EC Directive 89/686/EEC and the related standard EN374 or applicable federal, stat and national legislation.

Protective clothing: Impervious clothing. The type should be selected according to concentrations, quantities and duration of handling at the specific workplace. In dust generating operations wear disposable coverall.

Respriatory protection : Required when dusts are generated. Choice of respiratiory protection should be appropriate to the task and the level of existing engineering controls. Use air-purifying respirator with comibnation filters for routine powder handling in process scale and positive-pressure air supplied respirator if there is a potential of uncontrolled release. In laboratories, use fume hood or laminar flow booth.

Environmental exposure controls: Do not release into drains.

Stability and reactivity

REACTIVITY

No known reactivity hazards under normal conditions.

CHEMICAL STABILITY

The substance is chemically stable at standard room temperature conditions, generally 15 to 25C.

POSSIBILITY OF HAZARDOUS REACTIONS AND CONDITIONS TO AVOID

None known.
