According to the European Union Risk Assessment Report (France 2007), no valid test on the toxicity of chloroform to terrestrial organisms is available. A PNEC for the soil compartment can be derived from the aquatic PNEC by using the equilibrium partitioning method: PNECsoil(ww) = (Ksoil-water/RHOsoil) * PNECaquatic * 1000. Using a value of 5.77 m3/m3 for the soil-water partitioning coefficient (Ksoil-water), a PNECsoil(ww) of 496 microgram/kg (ww) and a PNECsoil(dw) of 560 microgram/kg (dw) are obtained (France 2007).

Because of the low bioaccumulation potential of chloroform, the potential for secondary poisoning can be considered to be negligible (France 2007). Thus, the terrestrial compartment is unlikely to be of concern with regard to exposure to chloroform.
