OBSERVATIONS

For the column elution procedure, a limit of detection value of <0.1 mg/L was observed for each fraction. Because of this, no additional runs at lower flow rates were required.

Collected fractions were checked for the Tyndall effect by turbidity measurements to ensure that eluted fractions were effectively filtered and did not give significant light scattering indicated presence of particles. Results were found to be satisfactory as no significant differences were observed between the buffer blank and the test item solutions.

It is noted that inconsistent spectra were obtained for the test item solutions. None of the test item solution spectra were consistent with the spectra of the test substance standard and were therefore not considered to contain the test substance above the calculated limit of detection of the method (0.1 mg/L).

The buffer blank spectrum (after extraction with dichloromethane as for test item solutions) is consistent with the test item solution spectra with regard to absorbance profile although varying absorbance’s are observed. This suggests that the buffer is contributing to the absorbance profile observed for the test item solutions after extraction with dichloromethane.

The test solution absorbance’s have therefore been corrected for the absorbance from the buffer extract blank.

The standard 1B (Approximately 0.5 mg/L) spectrum indicates that the absorbance’s obtained for the test item solutions and corrected for the absorbance of the buffer blank extract would be below that of the lower test substance standards prepared and are consistent with a concentration of < limit of detection (<0.1 mg/L).

The standard 1D (approximately 2 mg/L) spectrum indicates that the test substance absorbance profile is different to that observed from the buffer extract blank and test item solutions.

The example spectra indicate the variation observed for the test item solutions. Note that the extract blank has the highest absorbance, indicating that the absorbance profile obtained for the test item solutions is not consistent with that of butyl zimate and therefore the test item solutions are not considered to contain butyl zimate above the calculated limit of detection of the method (0.1mg/L).

Conclusions:
The water solubility was determined to be < 0.1 mg/L at 25 °C and pH 8.
