Description of key information

A study was performed to assess the inhibitory effect of Salicynalva on the respiration of activated sewage sludge. The study was conducted in accordance with OECD TG 209. Cultures of activated sewage sludge were incubated with synthetic sewage under vigorous aeration and in the presence of the test substance. Aeration was interrupted after three hours and the rates of respiration measured electrochemically for each culture. Percent inhibition of respiration was calculated for each culture after a three hour contact period by comparing oxygen depletion rates for the test substance cultures with those for the control culture. A reference substance, known to inhibit respiration, 3,5-dichlorophenol was tested concurrently with the test substance in order to demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the procedure. The respiration inhibition at 100 mg/l showed 3 and 0% inhibition, which resulted in an EC50 and NOEC (respiration inhibition) value for Salicynalva of >100 and >=100 mg/l for the three hour contact time, respectively.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L
