Description of key information

All MDI substances are not flammable. Although a flammability value was determined in the study from DEKRA for MDI mixed isomers, this result can be considered ambiguous and the same conclusion (i.e. not flammable) can be expected for the MDI mixed isomers. Based on results obtained for all other substances of the category, it can be concluded that MDI mixed isomers will not be flammable.

Additional information

The test substance is covered by the category approach of methylenediphenyl diisocyanates (MDI). Hence, data of the category substances can be used to cover this endpoint. No self-ignition temperature data is available for MDI mixed isomers. Some data is available on the structural analogues 4,4'-MDI (heated above room temperature) and oMDI. No self-ignition was observed in the Fisk and Langner study (1995) for 4,4'-MDI up to 601 degrees Celsius following EU method A.15. In the Fisk and Langer (1995) study, the self-ignition (autoflammability) for oMDI was determined for the test substance. Following the EU method A.15, the self-ignition temperature was determined to be greater than 600 degrees Celsius. Hence, it can be concluded that the self-ignition temperature for MDI mixed isomers will be above 600 degrees Celsius.
