Individual results:
Grinding, sieving and drying of the test item, barium nitrate and cellulose:
The cellulose was dried by treating the sample at 105 °C ± 5 °C until the weight was constant. Due to the particle size of the cellulose grinding and sieving was not necessary.
The barium nitrate was ground, sieved < 0.12 mm and dried by treating the sample at 105 °C ± 5 °C until the weight was constant.
The test item was dried by treating the sample at 50 °C ± 5 °C under vacuum until the weight was constant.
Preliminary test:
Three test mixtures with the test item and cellulose 2:1 started to burn and distinguished.
Three test mixtures with barium nitrate/cellulose 2:1 burned down completely in 62 s, 64 s and 60 s, respectively.
Due to the results of the preliminary test the main test had to be performed.
Main test:
Four tests were performed for the reference mixture (barium nitrate and cellulose) with 50, 55, 60 and 70 wt. % oxidizer (barium nitrate). The results are shown in Table 1.
Table 1: Burning times and rates of reference mixtures
Barium nitrate [wt.%] | Burning time over 200 mm [s] | Burning rate [mm/s] |
50 | 148 | 1.35 |
55 | 117 | 1.71 |
60 | 109 | 1.84 |
70 | 165 | 1.21 |
60 | 115 | 1.74 |
The highest burning rate of 1.84 mm/s was found for the mixture with 60 wt. % oxidizer.
Mixtures of the test item with cellulose were prepared in between 10 and 90 wt. % of the test item and tested. Table 2 shows the results.
Table 2: Burning times and rates of test item mixtures
Test item [%] | Burning time over 200 mm [s] | Burning rate [mm/s] |
10 | 202 | 0.99 |
20 | 263 | 0.76 |
30 | 319 | 0.63 |
50 | Flame extinguished in the preliminary burning phase | - |
70 | Flame extinguished in the preliminary burning phase | - |
90 | Mixture melted and flame extinguished in the preliminary burning phase | - |
Due to the fact that the maximum burning rate of the mixtures of the test item with cellulose was lower than the maximum burning rate of the reference mixture, six tests were performed only with the three mixtures (10, 20 and 30 wt.% of the test item) with the highest burning rates to verify these values (see Table 3).
Table 3: Burning times and rates of the fastest test item mixtures
Test: | t [s] | V [mm/s] | t [s] | V [mm/s] | t [s] | V [mm/s] | t [s] | V [mm/s] | t [s] | V [mm/s] | t [s] | V [mm/s] |
10 % | 202 | 0.99 | 215 | 0.93 | 209 | 0.96 | 217 | 0.92 | 222 | 0.90 | 228 | 0.88 |
20 % | 263 | 0.76 | 279 | 0.72 | 276 | 0.73 | 271 | 0.74 | 282 | 0.71 | 265 | 0.76 |
30 % | 319 | 0.63 | 318 | 0.63 | 327 | 0.61 | 332 | 0.60 | 331 | 0.60 | 322 | 0.62 |
Each mixture was measured 6 times. The mean burning rate for the mixture with the highest burning rate (10 wt.%) was 0.99 mm/s. The difference between the mean burning rate and the maximum burning rate was ≤ 10 % for this mixture.
The maximum burning rate of the mixtures of the test item and cellulose (0.99 mm/s) was lower than the maximum burning rate of the reference mixture of cellulose and barium nitrate (1.84 mm/s).
Due to the fact that the mixture of the test item with cellulose burned slower compared to the reference mixture it was concluded that the test item had no oxidizing properties.
