Description of key information

A study was performed to assess the inhibitory effect of Salicynalva on the growth of the unicellular green alga Selenastrum capricornutum according to OECD TG 201. Algal cultures exposed to six test concentrations of Salicynalva plus one untreated control and one solvent control (100 µL auxiliary solvent per litre), were incubated on an orbital shaker under continuous illumination at 24 ± 1°C for 72 hours. Growth was monitored daily by measuring the number of cells in each culture. Nominal test concentrations: 0. 22, 0. 46, 1. 0, 2. 2, 4. 6 and 10 mg Salicynalva/L and the mean measured test concentrations: 0. 10, 0. 26, 0.64, 1. 8, 3. 5 and 5. 1 mg Salicynalva/L. Values ranged from 82 - 101 % of nominal at 0 hours, apart from the lowest exposure level which was 57% of nominal, and 30 - 65 % of nominal at 72 hours. The following results were found based on mean measured concentrations: 72h-ErC50: 2.58 mg/L and 72h-NOECr: 0.26 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
2.58 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.26 mg/L
