First-aid measures

General       Remove affected person from further exposure.

Skin contact:       Wash the contacted area with soap and water.

Eye contact:       Rinse cautiously eyes with plenty of water for several (15) minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.

Ingestion:       If the person is conscious, rinse mouth with water and give water or milk to drink. Call a poison center or doctor/ physician if the person feel unwell.

Inhalation:       Not relevant.

Fire-fighting measures

Fire Hazard Class: non-combustible

Enhances of other substances, keep away from combustible materials.

In case of fire use plenty of water for extinction.

Hazardous thermal decomposition and combustion products oxides of nitrogen. Protective equipment for fire-fighters: self-contained breathing apparatus. wear protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Any spillage should be cleaned up promptly, swept up and placed in a suitable, clean, labeled container for safe disposal. Clean up the residual spillage thoroughly with plenty of water.

Leakage of solid material and concentrated solution must be stopped. Large amount of leakage into drains, surface water and ground water must be prevented, because it can cause eutrophysation.

Handling and storage

Keep away from heat and precaution to avoid mixing with combustible materials, reducing agents, alkalies and metals. No smoking. Suitable material for containers: Plastic bags, drums, containers and vessels.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Personal protective equipment:

Respiratory system: -

Eyes: Use chemical safety goggles (e.g. EN 166)

Hands: Chemical resistant gloves (e.g. rubber, PVC gloves)

Other: Normal working clothes.

Stability and reactivity

The anhydrous calcium nitrate is not stable, because it is hygroscope and under normal conditions it absorbs water and it converts into the hydrated form. The hydrated form is stable under normal storage, handling and usage conditions.

Conditions to avoid: Permanent temperatures above 100°C and contamination with combustible materials

Materials to avoid: organic combustible material on high temperatures

Hazardous reactions/decomposition products: nitrogen oxides

Disposal considerations

Do not empty into drains; dispose of this material and its container in a safe way and in accordance with all applicable local and national regulations.

Depending on degree and nature of contamination it can dilute and dispose of by use as fertilizer (as raw material for liquid fertilizer), or dispose to an authorized waste facility.

Waste code: 06 03 14 solid salts and solutions other than those mentioned in 06 03 11 and 06 03 13

Package waste disposal: Empty the bag by shaking / wash the container with plenty of water (remove as much as possible of its contents).  If approved by local authorities, empty bags/containers  may be disposed of as non-hazardous material or returned for recycling.
