In a non standard test the inhibition of 1,4 -dioxane on seed germination of the plant Lactuca sativa (common lettuce) was investigated. Lettuce seeds were grown on agar medium in plastic containers with lids at a temperature of 30 °C. A nominal EC50 of 16.5 mmol/L was determined after 3 days (Reynolds, 1989), which corresponds to approx. 1450 mg/L (= 1450 mg/kg water).
