Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on nominal concentrations, the 72-hour EbC50 (based on growth) and ErC50 (based on growth rate) of MON 13900 to Selenastrum capricornutum were determined to be 34.8 mg/L and 85.2 mg/L, respectively.  The corresponding NOEC values were 6.25 and 12.5 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
85.2 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
12.5 mg/L

Additional information

A study was conducted to determine the toxicity of MON 13900 to the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum according to OECD Guideline 201 and EU Method C.3 in compliance with GLP. Cultures of algae at a nominal cell density of 104 cells/mL in 150 mL flasks containing 100 mL test solution were exposed to nominal concentrations of the test substance at 0 (control), 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L. Growth inhibition compared to controls, based on areas under the growth curve, ranged from 0.8% at 3.125 mg/L to 84.4% at 100 mg/L. Similarly, growth rate inhibition ranged from 0.2% to 55.8% over the range of test substance concentrations. Measured concentrations of the test substance were within 20% of nominal values throughout the exposure period. Based on nominal concentrations, the 72-hour EbC50 (based on growth) and ErC50 (based on growth rate) of the test substance were determined to be 34.8 mg/L and 85.2 mg/L, respectively. The corresponding NOEC values were 6.25 and 12.5 mg/L.
