Justification:

The criteria given in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2017) are used to decide if the substance fulfils the PBT or vPvB criteria.

Persistence Assessment

Alkylation and transalkylation products of biphenyl with propene represents is an UVCB substance composed of different constituents. Each constituent is present as a mixture of isomers with unknown composition. Based on the complex composition in combination with the physico-chemical properties of the substance biodegradation simulation testing is technically not feasible. This was assessed within a feasibility study conducted according to OECD 309 guideline. In an weight of evidence approach, considering study results and QSAR estimates for the main constituents of the UVCB, it was concluded that Alkylation and transalkylation products of biphenyl with propene is potentially persistent or very persistent.

 

Bioaccumulation Assessment

Alkylation and transalkylation products of biphenyl with propene represents is an UVCB substance composed of different constituents. Each constituent is present as a mixture of isomers with unknown composition. Based on the complex composition in combination with the physico-chemical properties of the substance bioaccumulation testing is technically not feasible. In an weight of evidence approach, considering study results and QSAR estimates for the main constituents of the UVCB, it was concluded that Alkylation and transalkylation products of biphenyl with propene is bioaccumulative and potentially very bioaccumulative.

Toxicity Assessment

The aquatic toxicity of Alkylation and transalkylation products of biphenyl with propene was tested for three trophic levels (fish, Daphnia, algae), including a long-term reproduction study on Daphnia. No effects were observed up to the limit of solubility in the used test media. However, the substance needs to be classified for specific target organ toxicity, category 2 (STOT RE 2). Hence, the T criterion is fulfilled based on the mammalian toxicity data.
