Description of key information

Methylal has been considered a slight irritant to the skin of the rabbit with a calculated Primary Irritation Index of 0.42 (Rush, 1989). Myers (1982) concluded that methylal was not irritating when applied at 0.5 ml on rabbit skin. but methylal is not irritating according to CLP Regulation.

No key value was considered for eye irritation because no evaluation criteria of results was given by Myers (1982).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Additional information

Slightly irritating for skin irritation/corrosion was retained (instead of not irritating) because evaluation criteria have been presented in the test of Rush (1989) and not in the assay of Myers (1982).

Myers (1982) concluded that application of 0.1 and 0.01 mL of methylal per rabbit eye induced minor to moderate eye irritation and mild transient conjunctival irritation, respectively but evaluation criteria of results was given.

Respiratory irritation assay was not performed.
