Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The half-life of methyal in the atmosphere is 2.3 days.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life in air:
2.3 d
Degradation rate constant with OH radicals:
6.69 cm³ molecule-1 s-1

Additional information

Methylal half-life in air is reported in the National Library of Medicines’s Hazardous Substance Data Base file (HSDB) as follows. “Vapor phase methylal will react with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere by H abstraction. The estimated rate of this reaction is 6.69x10-12 cu cm/molec-sec. Assuming a hydroxyl radical concentration of 5x10 +5 per cu cm, the half-life of methylal in the atmosphere is 2.3 days."
