Description of key information

2,2'-azobis(2,4 -dimethylvaleronitrile) is an unstable substance to hydrolysis, photolysis and thermolysis due to its azo group. Because of this instablility the substance is used as radical initiator in polymerization reactions.

The available data according to OECD 111 study indicate a half-life of approx. 650 h at 25 °C. Different potential transformation products from the hydrolysis are identified using the QSAR Toolbox v4.2 simulation. Additionally, the substance undergoes thermal transformation. According to company data the transformation products 2,4 -dimethylpentanenitrile (CAS# 69975 -94 -6) (7 %), 4 -methyl-2 -methylenepentanenitrile (7 %) and 2,3 -diisobutyl-2,3 -dimethylsuccinonitrile (CAS# 80822 -82 -8) (85 %) are formed during the reaction.
