Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
ring method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Batch n°: ZR027180PUG231
- Analytical purity: 99.3%
- Expiration date: 9 November 2006
- Storage condition: at room temperature, 10 to 30°C
Key result
Surface tension:
58.6 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Remarks on result:
other: No concentration was reported but the test was conducted using a normal working dilution

The measured mean surface tension of pure water was determined to be 71.94 mN/m, the literature value at this temperature is 72.75 mN/m and therefore the calibration factor was determined to be 1.0113.
The results for the test substance solution, which was prepared at the normal working dilution, are presented in the table below.

Table: Surface Tension Readings at 20°C

Time after filling vessel (min) Surface Tension (mN/m)
58 59.2
59 59.2
60 59.2
61 59.1
62 59.1
Mean 59.16

After application of the calibration factor, the mean result was 59.8 mN/m. This result is lower than 60 mN/m, md therefore correction using the Harkins-Jordan factor was performed.

The mean corrected result was 58.6 mN/m.

Conclusions:
The surface tension at 20°C of an aqueous solution of the test substance at the normal working dilution was determined to be 58.6 mN/m.

Description of key information

From a key study (K1, Bates, 2002) according to OECD guideline 115 and EC method A.5, the surface tension of the test substance at the normal working dilution and at 20°C was determined to be 58.6 mN/m.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
58.6

Additional information

The measured mean surface tension was determined for a normal working dilution of the test substance
