Furthermore, as determinations 1 and 3 indicated a distinct rise in the baseline which was consistent with a browning of the test item, the test item was considered to have decomposed above approximately 290 °C (563 K).

Discussion

Determinations 1 and 3 indicated a distinct rise in the baseline, consistent with a browning of the test item; thus the test item was considered to have decomposed above approximately 290 °C (563 K). As a result of the low rate of enthalpy change during decomposition, the onset temperature of decomposition could only be approximated.

Similar thermographic profiles were obtained using air and nitrogen atmospheres; this indicated that the observed decomposition was probably thermal and not oxidative.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The test item has been determined to melt at 148.2 ± 0.5 °C (421.4 ± 0.5 K) and then decompose from approximately 290 °C (563 K) at 101.1 to 101.8 kPa. As the test item decomposed no boiling temperature could be determined.
