Executive summary:

The Pensky-Martens tester, a closed cup apparatus, was used to determine the flash point of the material. Prior to testing, the sample cup and lid were inspected for cleanliness and any contaminants were removed. The barometric pressure, room temperature, and relative humidity were then recorded. The test sample was added to the sample container to the filling mark inside the test cup. The heating dial was turned on and adjusted to the desired heating level. The switch for the stirrer was turned on, mixing the vapor space and the bulk liquid. The heating rate for the test was approximately 5 to 6°C per minute. The valve was opened on the methane tank and the pilot flame was lit. The test flame was then adjusted to match the 4mm diameter gauge ring on the lid by turning the pinch valve. The test flame was applied to the sample every 1°C. While the test flame was applied, the stirring motor was turned off.

Visual observations were made and the flash point temperature was recorded. The sample is deemed to have flashed when a large flame appears and instantaneously propagates itself over the entire surface of the test specimen. Once the observation was recorded, the valve on the apparatus for the gas line was closed to extinguish the flame.

FP = T + 0.033(760 - P)

T = Observed flash point temperature (°C)

P = Barrometric pressure (mm Hg)

The actual flash point of the sample was then reported as the corrected temperature. The corrected temperature is rounded to the nearest 0.5°C.

After the sample flashed or boiling was observed, the test was terminated. The sample was allowed to cool near room temperature, the sample was then discarded and the tester was thoroughly cleaned. The flash point temperature was then corrected using the following equation.
