Description of key information

Acute and chronic studies are available for all three trophic levels.

A acute fish study according to OECD 203 guideline under GLP was conducted withZebra fish (Danio rerio) over a 96-hour exposure period.

The test was performed with a semi-static system, and test solutions were renewed every 24 hours. During the 96-hour exposure period, no death and visible toxic signs were observed in the control group and the test group.

According to the results of the test, the 96-hour LC50of Ethylene glycol dibenzoate toZebra fish (Danio rerio) was greater than 0.434 mg/L (geometric mean concentration), which was the saturated solution and equal to a loading rate of 100 mg/L, and no death and visible toxic signs were observed under this condition.

This result is supported by a non-GLP OECD 236 study. LOELR = 10 mg/L and EL50 mg/L =>10<100 mg/L (nominal loading rates).

An OECD 202 study according to protocol under GLP is available. Exposure of Daphnia magna to the test item gave EC50 values based on the 0-Hour measured test concentrations of greater than 2.4 mg/L. The No Observed Effect Concentration was 2.4 mg/L. This study showed that there were no toxic effects at saturation.

An OECD 201 study with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata according to protocol under GLP is available. The ErC50 is greater than 0.87 mg/L and the ErC10 is 0.30 mg/L (geometric mean concentrations).

A long-term fish study according to OECD 210 guideline under GLP was conducted with Zebra fish (Danio rerio).

The test was performed with a semi-static system, and test solutions were renewed every 24 hours. During the exposure period, observations on hatching and survival were made one time on 3 hours after exposure and then daily and the number were recorded. For embryos, larvae and juvenile fish, the abnormal appearance or behaviour observed were also recorded. The dry weights on a replicate basis and individual total lengths were measured at the end of the test.

The geometric mean exposure concentration were calculated and used for endpoint calculations. The lowest NOEC value is 0.073 mg/L for larvae survival and dry wieght at the end of the test.

A long-term study according to OECD 211 guideline under GLP was conducted with Daphnia magna. The test was performed with a semi-static system, and test solutions were renewed daily. The geometric mean exposure concentration were calculated and used for endpoint calculations. The lowest EC10 was found for reproduction and is 0.79 mg/L.

The toxicity to activated sludge was determined in accordance with OECD Test Guideline 209, and in compliance with the OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice.

The EC10, EC20, EC50 and EC80 values of ethylene glycol dibenzoate for activated sludge after 3 hours contact time are all >1280 mg/L , the highest concentration tested. Ethylene glycol dibenzoate is therefore considered not harmful to activated sludge.
