A test substance is considered highly flammable when it ignites spontaneously in contact with water, or evolves a flammable gas at a minimum rate of ≥ 1 litre/kg of the substance per hour.

 

None of the components of the test substance does contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with water and/or to the evolution of a flammable gas. Moreover the test substance was dissolved in water during the validation of an analytical method (see IUCLID section 8) and during determination of water solubility (see endpoint 4.8). It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite spontaneously in contact with water.

 

In conclusion, MTBAC is considered ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water.

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test substance pile. The test substance melted, burned with a blue yellow flame, emitted sparks and turned into a light yellow brown residue. Grey smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished after 4 seconds and no propagation of combustion was observed.

A test substance is considered pyrophoric when it ignites within five minutes of coming in contact with air.

None of the components of the test substance does contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air. Moreover the test substance was handled under normal laboratory conditions during the determination of the physico-chemical properties. It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite in contact with air at room temperature.

 

In conclusion, MTBAC has no pyrophoric properties.

Description of key information

In a GLP-compliant study performed in accordance with EC A.10 and UN-MTC Section 33.2.1 (Test N.1), the substance has been determined to be 'not highly flammable' by ignition. 
The substance lacks structural alerts for pyrophoricity and for flammability in contact with water. Furthermore the substance is known to be very soluble in water. Experience in handling showed that the substance does not react with water nor ignite spontaneously when coming into contact with air at normal temperatures.

Additional information

The preliminary screening test was performed without a wetted zone and no propagation of combustion was observed. The UN N.1 flammability test is essentially the same as the EC A.10 test in case no (propagation of) combustion occurs in the preliminary screening test. In such a case a wetted zone (applied in the UN N.1 test) is of no relevance.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Justification for non-classification according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008:

- Because not flammable by ignition, no classification is required for the hazard 'Flammable solid'.

- Based on the statement, no classification is required for the hazard 'Pyrophoric solids'.

- Based on the statement, no classification for the hazard 'Substances which in contact with water emits flammable gases'.

- Because of the melting point of < 160°C, the substance does not need to be considered for self-heating classification.
