Procedure:

The test is designed to determine the flammability of solids. A standardized pile of the test item is ignited with a flame and the burning rate will be evaluated. The burning behaviour will first be

checked with a preliminary test. lf the test item bums and the burning time is below the threshold the main test will be performed.

The test item is loosely filled into a mould. The mould, made of metal, has a length of 250 mm and a triangular cross section with an inner height of 10 mm and an inner width of 20 mm. On both sides

of the mould in a longitudinal direction two metal sheets are mounted as lateral limitations which project 2 mm beyond the upper edge of the triangular cross section. The mould is then dropped

three times from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface in order to evenly distribute the test item. lf necessary the mould is then filled up again. Then the lateral limitations are removed and the excess

substance is scraped off. A non-combustible and non-porous plate is placed on top of the mould, the apparatus is inverted and the mould is removed.

As ignition source a flame is used to ignite the pile at one end.

Preliminary test:

At one end of the pile a flame is applied for maximum 2 minutes. lf the pile bums over a distance of 200 mm within 2 minutes, the main test has to be performed. lf there is no ignition of the test item

after 2 minutes of contact with the flame or the pile bums less than 200 mm within 2 minutes, the main test is unnecessary.

Main test:

At one end of the pile a flame is applied. After the pile has burned over a distance of 80 mm, the rate of burning is measured over the next 100 mm. The test is performed six times, using a clean

cool plate each time.

The test item could not be ignited with a flame. The test item melted. The performance of the main test was not necessary.
