Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Alkylnaphthalene is designated as not inherently biodegradable.
Alkylated naphthalene, EC Number 700-826-8, is a close structural analog of the Alkylnaphthalene being assessed in this dossier. The substances have similar chemical and physical properites and therefore the biodegradation testing for Alkylated naphthalene, EC Number 700-826-8 and EC number 410-190-0 can be used as read-across to the alkylnaphthalene in this dossier.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

Determination of inherent biodegradability: CO2 in sealed vessels (headspace test) with Alkylated Naphthalene was performed according to the modified test method based on the OECD guideline No. 310, 2006.

Since, Alkylated Naphthalene was poorly soluble in water, 2.4 mg test substance, corresponding to a final organic carbon concentration of 20 mg C/l, was added directly to the test medium (final volume bottle 107 ml). The substance was incubated in a buffer-mineral salts medium inoculated with a mixed population of micro-organisms. Note that the test substance was added immediately before closing the bottles. The test was performed in sealed bottles with a headspace of air.

The relative biodegradation values calculated from the measurements performed during the test period revealed no significant biodegradation of Alkylated Naphthalene. Since all criteria for acceptability of the test were met, this study was considered to be valid. In conclusion, Alkylated Naphthalene is designated as not inherently biodegradable.

Alkylated naphthalene, EC Number 700-826-8, is a close structural analog of the Alkylnaphthalene being assessed in this dossier. The substances have similar chemical and physical properites and therefore the biodegradation testing for Alkylated naphthalene, EC Number 700-826-8 can be used as read-across to the alkylnaphthalene in this dossier. The ready biodegradation testing for Alkylated Naphthalene showed the material is not readily biodegradable.

A substance with same EC number (410-190-0) identified during the Inquiry Process reported a ready biodegradation study.

This study also demonstrated that the substance is not readily biodegradable.
