Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
Assessment under REACH Annex XI section 1.2 indicates absence of contact with water resulting in the emission of flammable gases.
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Remarks:
Study conducted to GLP and in compliance with agreed protocols, with no or minor deviations from standard test guidelines and/or minor methodological deficiencies, which do not effect the quality of the relevant results.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks:
or specified in description of method (migrated information)
Burning time:
82 s

Results

Preliminary screening study

The pile ignited and propagated combustion over 200mm in 2 minutes 56 seconds.

Main test

The mean moisture content was 0.160 w/w%

The test item failed to propagate combustion over the 100mm of the main test under 45 seconds in any of the six tests performed.

See attached background information for results

Interpretation of results:
non flammable
Remarks:
Migrated information
Conclusions:
The test item has been determined to be not flammable
Executive summary:

Method

The flammability (solids) was determined by measuring the burning rate of test item prepared as a pile of set dimensions. Testing was conducted using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A10 Flammability (Solids) of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC

Results

The test item failed to propagate combustion over the 100mm of the main test under 45 seconds in any of the six tests performed.

Conclusion

The test item therefore does not meet the criteria for classification for flammable solids.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
Assessment under REACH Annex XI section 1.2 indicates an absence of pyrophoricity.

Description of key information

Flammability: Non-flammable; EC Method A.10; Tremain, 2000

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

In accordance with section 1.2 of REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI the study of flammability has been completed based on weight of available evidence. The solid substance was determined to be non-flammable following a study conducted in accordance with Method A10 Flammability (Solids) of Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008.

Other measures of flammability include pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water. These can be considered not a concern for the substance and testing waived if consideration of the structure and experience in handling and use show that no flammability hazards are envisaged. Such a screening procedure represents an intelligent testing strategy for flammability. If applied correctly then only solid substances for which it is suspected will give a positive result in either the pyrophoric properties or flammability on contact with water tests need to be tested.

A review of the structure suggests that there are no chemical groups present that would imply pyrophoric properties or flammability on contact with water. A review of handling and used implies no pyrophoric properties or flammability on contact with water. Based on the absence of structural alerts and experience in handling and use negative results are predicted for pyrophoric properties and flammability of contact with water. Based on the known Flash Point of the substance it is considered not to be flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance does not meet the criteria for classification in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
