Description of key information

In a valid, guideline-conform study conducted under GLP on the short-term toxicity with test zebra fish an LC50 within the range >20 and <43 mg/L was observed.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

This study was designed to assess the acute toxic effects of the test compound on the zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio HAM. and BUCH.). Aquaria containing 10 liter were loaded with 10 fish each. A semi-static procedure was used (replacement of the test water after about 48 hours). The study was conducted in compliance with the OECD guideline 203. The concentrations were selected on the basis of 2 preliminary studies conducted at the BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Department af Toxicology. The experimental phase of the main study started on Nov. 17, 1997 for a period of 96 hours.

Based on the nominal concentrations the median lethal concentration LC 50 (96 h) is > 46.4 and < 100 mg/L.

Mortality occurred first at the concentration 100 mg/L. Other substance-related effect(s) was (were) the symptom(s) apathy, narcotic-like state, tumbling, swimming near water surface, swimming near the bottom. The no observed effect concentration NOEC (96 h) is 21.5 mg/L.

Based on the analytically detected concentrations the median lethal concentration LC 50 (96 h) is > 10 and < 44 mg/L. The no observed effect concentration NOEC (96 h) is 4mg/L.

Based on the mean values of the analytically detected concentrations after 1+24+48+96 hours the median lethal concentration LC 50 is > 20 and < 43 mg/L. The no observed effect concentration NOEC (1+24+48+96 hours) is 9 mg/L.
