Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The lower and upper flammability limits of butenes are 1.6 - 10%. The range reported are based on the data from the members of the butenes category: but-1-ene (CAS 106-98-9), 2-butene (CAS 107-01-7) and 2-methylpropene (CAS 115-11-7).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
extremely flammable

Additional information

The data reported are derived from the members of the butenes category and were obtained from the CRC Handbook (Lide 2008). This handbook is peer-reviewed and is considered reliable and suitable for use as a key study for this endpoint. The lower and upper explosion limits of the butenes category are 1.6 % - 10 %.Although data are only available from a single peer-reviewed handbook, the results are very similar across the different isomers and the consistency of the results between the structural analogues provides further weight of evidence that the data are reliable.

The lower and upper explosive limits of 2-methylpropene are 1.8 % - 9.6 % (Lide 2008). The lower and upper explosion limits of 2-butene are 1.7 % - 9.7 % (Lide 2008). The lower and upper explosive limits of but-1-ene are 1.6 % - 10 % (Lide 2008). The data would result in a classification for butenes of category 1 flammable gas and the hazard statement 'extremely flammable gas'.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The lower and upper explosion limits of the butenes are 1.6 % - 10 %. The data would result in a classification of category 1 flammable gas and the hazard statement 'extremely flammable gas'.
