Ferrous slags

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
Ferrous slags result from the making of iron and steel, and consist mainly of fused oxides of aluminium, calcium, magnesium, iron and silicon
Category description:
ABS/GBS-BOS-EAF C-EAF S-SMS (in general, increasing complexity of manufacturing process).
Category rationale:
Ferrous slags are produced in steel mills as essential by-products of iron and steel manufacturing and are formed at temperatures of more than 1400 °C from slag formers like lime and dolomite. All ferrous slags are comparable in mineralogical composition and resemble natural rocks. Their physicochemical properties are almost identical. They do not exhibit toxic properties in the tests summarised in the CSR. They are not corrosive in vivo and in vitro, exhibit no relevant irritant potential, are not sensitising and do not show any mutagenic potential. Their ecotoxicological properties are almost identical, as shown in various laboratory and field studies. So the short term toxicity to fish and terrestrial or aquatic invertebrates is extremely low. There is no toxic effect detectable against micoorganisms (activated sludge), and aquatic plants are not influenced, showing that no negative impact on the food chain by exposition to ferrous slags can be detected. For terrestrial plants ferrous slags even have a fertilising effect. So there are enough similarities to integrate the five slags to be registered into a single “Ferrous Slag Category”.
The category approach is therefore applied to efficiently fulfil REACH Registration requirements for these slags.
