Description of key information

Diethyl ether was reported to have low toxicity to the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus, with a 72-hour NOEC value for growth rate, biomass, and cell number of 100 mg/L (nominal) in an OECD guideline study (Test No. 201).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The growth inhibition effect of diethyl ether on Desmodesmus subspicatus was assessed over a period of 72 hours, and the study was conducted in compliance with the OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals No. 201, and in accordance with the Principles of GLP (LAUS, 2010b). A limit test was conducted with a 100 mg/L nominal concentration, with six replicates, and under static conditions. The diethyl ether recovery after 72 hours was 105% of the start concentration, the measured concentration at the beginning of the test 93% and at the end of the test 98% of the nominal concentration, respectively. Therefore, the determination of the results was based on the nominal concentration. No inhibition was observed. Based on growth rate, biomass, and cell number, the 72-hour NOEC is 100 mg/L and the 72-hour EC20 and EC50 are >100 mg/L.
