Description of key information

No boiling point was observed  for substances in the category Rosin, hydrogenated rosin and their salt up to the temperature tested (up to 275°C) in the test procedures.

Resins may discolour to dark brown when heated above 150°C.  This phenomenon is not the consequence of mass decomposition of the substance.  Rather, hydroperoxydes (oxidized resin acids) develop during ambient storage upon exposure to air and the heating of those hydroperoxides causes their decomposition: this forms high extinction coefficient  chromophores (hydroperoxyde cleavage) in small concentrations.

Any heating to elevated temperatures should occur under inert gas conditions to prevent darkening of the product.


Test was terminated at 275°C and no boiling point was observed. No decomposition was observed.

Sample discoloured to dark brown at 275°C.  This phenomenon is not the consequence of a decomposition reaction of the substance. Hydroperoxydes (oxydized resin acids) develop during ambient storage and the heating of those hydroperoxydes cause their decomposition: this forms powerfull chromophores (hydroperoxyde cleavage) that even in very small amount color the resin and bring the darkening.
