Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Bioaccumulation: aquatic/sediment

No data with the test substance are available. A read-across from component CAS 108-78-1, melamine, is justified (please refer section 13 for the read across justification). The experimental determinations of the bioconcentration factor BCF in 3 species of fish were reported. In these studies (Lech, 1984 and Nite, 2010) no bioaccumulation of melamine is expected as the determined bioconcentration factors in fish is determined to be < 1 (only at 0.2 ppm the BCF = 3.8). Based on this result, the test substance does not accumulate in organisms. In addition according to Annex IX, Section 9.3.2 column 2 of REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 a study on bioaccumulation need not to be conducted, if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (for instance a log Kow ≤ 3). The calculated log Kow of -3 at 25 °C (see section 4.7) of the test substance is below the threshold value of 4 (according to GHS criteria) and thus, accumulation in organisms of the test substance is not expected.

Additionally, the bioaccumulative properties of the degradation substances have been investigated. As they clearly meet the criteria of Annex IX, Column 2, 9.3.2 “the study does not to be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumualtion (Log Kow < 3)” with log Pow values ranging from -3.65 to -1.22, the studies do not need to be conducted. And the degradation substances do not meet the criteria for bioaccumulation.
