Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The biodegradability of Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-13-alkyl derivs., compds. with triethanolamine (CAS no. 68411-31-4) was studied in a OECD 301 B (CO2 -evolution) test. For both the reference and test substance >60% degradation within the 10-day window was achieved. The test substance is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable
Type of water:
freshwater

Additional information

Biodegradability of Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-13-alkyl derivs., compds. with triethanolamine (CAS no. 68411-31-4) was assessed in several laboratory studies. The Key Study by Brunswik-Titze (2004) evaluated the biodegradability of the test substance in an OECD 301 B (CO2 -evolution) test using activated sludge. The study was undertaken in accordance with GLP and highly reliable (Klimisch 1). The test substance was 101% degraded in 28 days (after acidification). On day 7 the mean degradation was already higher than 60%. In conclusion the test substance degraded more than 60% within the 10-day window and is readily biodegradable.

Supporting studies are as follows:

Supporting study by Schöberl (1992) was an OECD Guideline 301 A (DOC die away) test in accordance with GLP and highly reliable (Klimisch 1). The test substance was 94% degraded in 28 days. For both the reference and test substances >70% degradation within the 10-day window as achieved concluding that the test substance is readily biodegradable.

Supporting study by West (1996) was a screening test for a CO2 evolution study (Klimisch 2) using the read-across substance 2,2',2''-nitrilotriethanol (CAS 102-71-6). The read-across substance was rapidly and completely degraded (100%) within 5 days.

Supporting study by Gerike (1978) was a published study run for 19 days and in accordance with the modified screening study OECD TG 301 E (Klimisch 2) using the read-across substance 2,2',2''-nitrilotriethanol (CAS 102-71-6). The read-across substance was rapidly degraded (96%) within 19 days.

- Supporting study by Sasol (2002) was an OECD Guideline 301 B (CO2 evolution study) in accordance with GLP and reliable (Klimisch 2 for read-across). The read-across substance LAS-Na Salt (CAS number 68411-30-3) substance was degraded by 85% in 29 days. The test substance was readily biodegradable.
