Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

- REACH_ErC50 = >100 mg/l related to the growth rate after 96 h | Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) | DIN 38412, Part 9 | Fatty acids C 16-22, sodium salt
- EC50 = 53 mg/l related to the biomass after 72 h | Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) | DIN 38412, Part 9 | sodium laurate
- EC50 = 58 mg/l related to the biomass after 72 h | Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) | DIN 38412, Part 9 | sodium oleate
- EC50 = 230 mg/l related to the biomass after 72 h | Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) | DIN 38412, Part 9 | sodium behenate
- EC50 = 190 mg/l related to the biomass after 72 h | Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) | DIN 38412, Part 9 | tallow soap
- EC50 = 140 mg/l related to the biomass after 72 h | Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) | DIN 38412, Part 9 | palm kernel soap

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

To test the chronic toxicity of soaps the algae test according to DIN 38412 L9 was used with Scenedesmus subspicatus. For the Fatty acids C 16-22, sodium salts an EbC0 of 30 mg/l, an EbC10 of 48 mg/l and an EbC50 of 120 mg/l was observed after 96-hour exposure.

The ErC50 is >100 mg/l related to the growth rate.

For the following compounds EC10 and EC50 values after 72-hour exposure were identified:

EbC50

[mg/l]

EbC10

[mg/l]

Sodium laurate

53

9

Sodium oleate

58

10

Sodium behenate

230

30

Palm kernel soap

140

60

Tallow soap

190

70

Thus, sodium
oleate and sodium laurate are clearly toxic with EC10 values of 9 and 10 mg/l, followed by sodium behenate, palm kernel soap and tallow soap with EC10 values of 30, 60 and 70 mg/l. These findings show less toxicity. Also the fatty acid C 16 -22, sodium salts shows less toxicity.
From these available studies it can be concluded that the fatty acid C16 -18, sodium salt show less toxicity to aquatic algae.
