Description of key information

The long-term toxicity of benzyldimethylamine on aquatic invertebrates was tested in a study according to EU Method C.20 and OECD Guideline 211 in Daphnia magna. Based on the results a NOEC (21d) of 0.789 mg/L was determined for effects on reproduction and a NOEC (21d) of > 8.073 mg/L for effects on mortality.

A study was performed to assess the effects of N,N-Dimethylbenzylamine on the reproductive output ofDaphnia magnaSTRAUS under semi static conditions. The study was conducted in accordance with Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008, Method C.20 Daphnia magna Reproduction Test (2008), which equals in all relevant parts to the OECD Test guideline 211 (Daphnia magna Reproduction Test; adopted: Oct. 03, 2008). Young female Daphnia, aged less than 24 hours at the start of the test, were exposed to a range of concentrations, nominally 0.1, 0.316, 1, 3.16 and 10 mg/L of N,N-Dimethylbenzylamine dissolved in water. After a 21d-exposure period, the total number of living offspring produced per parent animal alive at the end of the test was assessed. The reproductive output of the Daphnia exposed to the test item was compared to that of the control in order to determine the Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) and the No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) according to Williams Multiple Sequential t-test Procedure). Additionally, the survival of the parent Daphnia and the time to production of first brood was determined using Fisher`s Exact Binomial Test with Bonferroni Correction.

The results are expressed in terms of time-weighted mean measured concentrations. Effective concentrations ranged from 70.0% to 88.2% of the nominal values in the freshly prepared media and from 68.4% to 84.1% in the media after 48 hours, or 72 hours of exposure.

The hardness of the dilution water used ranged from 14.2°dH to 15.8°dH (= 253.5 – 282.0 mg/L CaCO3)during the test.
